Seven Hollywood Releases, Two Theaters, Five Streamers: Your October 9 Weekend Watchlist

Big screen or couch? This week, you don’t have to choose. Hollywood is serving up two theatrical releases and five streaming titles between October 7 and October 9, 2026, covering everything from tech-world drama to creature horror. Here’s the full rundown, so you can plan your weekend.

This Week’s Hollywood Releases

1. The Social Reckoning: The Sequel Nobody Saw Coming

Directed by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jeremy Allen White, Mikey Madison and Jeremy Strong, this film follows Facebook whistleblower Frances Haugen as she teams up with Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz to expose the company’s internal documents and secrets. It’s a follow-up to the 2010 blockbuster The Social Network, so expect sharp dialogue and high-stakes tension.

2. Other Mommy: Don’t Open That Closet

Jessica Chastain headlines this psychological horror from director Rob Savage. Eight-year-old Bela lives in a tense household and forms an unsettling bond with a shape-shifting entity from her closet that looks exactly like her mother. When “Other Mommy” breaks the rule of staying in her room, the threats escalate against Bela and her whole family. The cast also includes Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman and Karen Allen.

3. Carrie (Prime Video): A Classic Gets a Series Treatment

This supernatural thriller follows a sheltered, bullied teenager with a deeply religious mother, who discovers telekinetic powers after starting public school following her father’s death. Summer H. Howell leads, with Samantha Sloyan, Matthew Lillard and Amber Midthunder. Mike Flanagan is among the directors.

4. Below (Netflix): Something’s in the Bay

In the remote Newfoundland town of Snook’s Arm, a fishing family faces relocation when a massive, unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing the bay after strange organic material turns up in harvested ice. A stubborn fisherman teams up with a visiting marine researcher to protect his family and uncover dark island secrets. Josh Hartnett, Mackenzie Davis and Charlie Heaton star.

5. Mortal Kombat 2 (JioHotstar): Round Two

Karl Urban, Adeline Rudolph and Jessica McNamee return, joined by arrogant movie star Johnny Cage. Earthrealm’s champions face a brutal inter-dimensional tournament, and must stop Outworld emperor Shao Kahn from conquering their world. Simon McQuoid directs.

6. Animals (Netflix): A Ransom, Hours on the Clock

Ben Affleck directs this crime thriller with Kerry Washington, Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun. When their young son goes missing, a rising political star and his wife have only hours to pay a massive ransom. As campaign optics and reality blur, the search uncovers dark secrets that threaten their marriage.

7. Matchbox: The Movie (Apple TV): Toy Cars, Real Chaos

Inspired by Mattel’s iconic toy vehicles, this film stars John Cena and Jessica Biel. A group of small-town childhood friends is turned upside down when their long-absent former leader, Sean (Cena), returns and drags them into a chaotic, globe-trotting pursuit. Sam Hargrave directs.
