Mac mini M5 Pro and M6 Drop Aftermarket Storage Upgrades as Apple Solders the NAND

Mac Mini M5 Pro: A screwdriver, a Torx bit, and a 2TB NAND module. That was the whole ritual for doubling an M4 Mac mini’s storage — for a fraction of Apple’s own price.

What Actually Changed Between M4 and M5 Pro

The M4 Mac mini kept its SSD on a separate board. Publications and creators put out step-by-step upgrade guides, and users followed them without much trouble, swapping in higher-capacity modules for far less than Apple’s configurator pricing. The M5 Pro and M6 generations shut that door completely.

As first reported by Androidheadlines, Expand Mac mini’s teardown analysis found the NAND flash soldered straight to the board. You can’t just pop the module out and drop in a new one. Back in August 2026, Expand Mac mini said it would start selling modules for the latest Mac mini once hardware compatibility testing wrapped up. That plan now looks unlikely — the company itself says the change leaves little room for its existing product line.

Why This Hits Indian Buyers Hardest

Apple’s storage tiers have always been the steepest step in the configurator. Indian buyers feel it more than most because import duties stack on top of the base premium.

The M4’s removable module was a genuine workaround: buy the cheapest configuration, upgrade later, and skip the tax on the top tier. That workaround is now gone. Anyone buying an M5 Pro or M6 Mac mini in India as of September 2026 has to commit to storage capacity at checkout, in one payment, at Apple’s prices.

What Happens Next for Owners and Repair Shops

Expand Mac mini’s roadmap is the clearest casualty here. A company that staked its brand on Mac mini modularity now has no product for the newest models and no obvious way to reverse-engineer around soldered NAND. Independent repair shops lose a steady revenue line too.

Storage swaps were one of the few Mac upgrades a small workshop could still pull off without Apple’s blessing. However, the broader signal matters more than the Mac mini itself. Apple gave the aftermarket a clear message: the era of easy upgrades is over.
