DC Studios isn’t showing everything about Clayface just yet — and that’s exactly the point. Ahead of the October 23 release, a fresh set of comic variant covers is giving fans their clearest look yet at Matt Hagen’s descent into one of Batman’s most unsettling villains, without ever revealing his final monstrous form.

It’s a marketing strategy built on restraint, and it’s working — every new cover raises the stakes without giving away the payoff.

Frank Cho’s Variant Reveals the Split Identity

DC Comics unveiled a new black-and-white variant cover by Frank Cho for Clayface: Celebrity Dirt #4, showing a poster version of Matt Hagen as Hollywood’s rising star while his real self dissolves into slime nearby, per The Direct’s coverage of the reveal. The imagery neatly captures the film’s central tragedy — a man split between the beloved public face he once had and the horrifying reality he’s become.

Jim Lee’s Cover Sets the Scene at a Movie Premiere

A second variant, illustrated by Jim Lee for Batman #14, shows Hagen transforming into Clayface in real time in front of a terrified crowd, with an Imperial Pictures sign visible behind him — a nod to the fictional Gotham movie studio from Batman: The Animated Series. It’s a clever bit of world-building that ties Hagen’s Hollywood backstory directly into DC’s animated legacy.

Earlier July Covers Hinted at the Body Horror

Two additional variant covers released back in July continue the theme. Brian Bolland’s cover for Batman & Robin: Year One #3 shows a hooded Hagen mid-transformation, his body visibly dripping, while Björn Barends’ cover for Detective Comics #1114 goes further, depicting a body that no longer holds a human outline at all — arguably the strongest tease yet of how extreme his final look will be in the film.

Why Hiding the Final Form Is a Smart Move?

Even though Creature Commandos already showed Clayface’s final animated form, DC Studios is deliberately keeping the live-action version under wraps. It’s a strategic choice with real thematic weight — the film is about a man who built his identity around his face, so marketing refusing to replace that face with the monster mirrors the story itself. It also keeps the reveal as the film’s biggest selling point for horror fans walking in.
