TSMC’s plans for its Arizona fab might be bigger than we think

We have already heard and confirmed the news that the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company’s (TSMC) plans to build a chip manufacturing facility in Arizona. TSMC officially announced that it will invest $12 billion in Arizona over the next few years. The facility will be set to produce semiconductors on the 5nm process node in 2024.

But rumors are floating around the internet stating that TSMC is considering going beyond the initial scope of its announcements. According to recent sources, job applications for the seventeen posts open for TSMC’s Arizona hint that perhaps something larger is in works at TSMC. the company is also hiring a decades-old Intel Corporation human resources and recruiting veteran for the Arizona plant at the start of this year.

It also rumored that TSMC’s plant expansion consideration involves facilitating six factories to bump its outlined output of 20,000 wafers/month five times to 100,000 wafers/month.

TSMC has also publicly revealed that it’s planning to recruit 300 engineers for its entry-level positions in the U.S. plant. Assuming that the company does not expand the Arizona facility and ends up hiring only 300 engineers from the thirteen thousand applications submitted.

Intel’s former Technology Manufacturing Human Resources Director, Mr. Benjamin Miller, has joined TSMC in January 2021. Mr. Miller has spent more than 25 years in Intel and has started managing teams made up of 12 employees to manage all of Intel’s human resources professionals globally. And this guy is now TSMC’s head of human resources.

All in all, the speculations going around TSMC’s Arizona facility states that it will indeed be expanding its production at the Arizona plant. But until TSMC officially declares anything nothing remains certain. And since United States Government is going ‘all-in’ to boost homeland chip production, TSMC will get plenty of incentive for its plans.
