Bethlehem Kudumba Unit Just Rewrote Malayalam Box Office History — Here’s How

Yet that’s exactly what’s happening with Nivin Pauly and Mamitha Baiju’s “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit.” Three weeks into its run, the film has climbed to the top spot among all-time grossers in Malayalam cinema — and it’s still adding fresh crores on its fourth Saturday.

Bethlehem Kudumba Unit: Overview

According to Pinkvilla’s report, this Saturday bump pushes the film’s Kerala total to roughly Rs. 134 crore, cementing its position as the highest grosser in Kerala box office history.

A Rom-Com Beating the Odds

What makes this run genuinely unusual is the film’s daily trend. After a solid opening week, collections dipped into the Rs. 2-4 crore range around the third week — a typical sign of a film winding down. Instead, “Bethlehem Kudumba Unit” bounced back hard on its fourth Saturday, nearly doubling its previous day’s number and defying the usual decline curve almost a month into release.

Romantic comedies rarely sustain this kind of weekend spike so late into their theatrical run; audiences typically front-load a rom-com’s box office in the opening fortnight. The fact that this film is still finding fresh weekend crowds in week four suggests unusually strong word-of-mouth carrying it well past its natural shelf life.

Part of a Bigger Malayalam Cinema Moment

This isn’t happening in isolation. Per Pinkvilla, Malayalam cinema has now delivered four Industry Hits in recent months alone: Thudarum, Lokah Chapter One: Chandra, Vaazha 2, and now Bethlehem Kudumba Unit. That’s a remarkable concentration of commercially and critically successful films in a short window, signaling a genuinely strong period for the industry rather than a one-off outlier.

The film’s success has also drawn attention from outside Malayalam cinema circles, with Kamal Haasan reportedly meeting and congratulating the team on its run — a notable cross-industry nod for a regional rom-com.

Where It Goes From Here

With the film already holding the all-time Kerala box office record and still posting fresh weekend growth, the natural next question is how far past Rs. 134 crore it can climb before its run finally tapers off. Given the film’s unpredictable trajectory so far, further surprises wouldn’t be out of the question.
