Crew Girl: Why the Cast Says Romance Book Fans Will Fall for This Trope-Filled Rowing Series

If you’re the type who dog-ears every enemies-to-lovers chapter in your favorite romance novel, Netflix’s Crew Girl might just be your next obsession. The YA sports drama, which premiered September 10, 2026, leans fully into beloved romance tropes — and the cast says that’s exactly the point.

What Crew Girl Is About

Crew Girl follows 16-year-old Teagan Tao (Miku Martineau), a rower whose life is upended after her father is caught in a financial fraud scandal and flees the country. Relocating to elite Easton Prep, Teagan joins the school’s all-boys rowing team as coxswain since there’s no girls’ team, quickly getting tangled in rivalries, loyalty tests, and a love triangle with team captain Josh (Sam Braun) and quietly driven teammate Cam (Kyle Clark).

Crew Girl: Overview

Why the Tropes Are the Draw

Rather than dodging familiar romance-novel staples, Crew Girl embraces them head-on: a love triangle, a fish-out-of-water heroine, a brooding rival-turned-love-interest, and a tight-knit friend group navigating messy loyalties. Star Miku Martineau has said Teagan’s single-minded passion for the sport was key to shaping her as a resilient, natural leader worth rooting for. Castmates Sam Braun and Kyle Clark have also floated ideas for a potential Season 2, hinting at a summer-break storyline that leans further into the group’s chemistry outside the boathouse. For romance readers who love a slow-burn triangle with earned emotional beats, the show’s embrace of these familiar tropes is being framed as a feature, not a flaw.
