Online harassment against K-pop idols has been an ongoing battle for years, but this week STARSHIP Entertainment, the agency behind girl group IVE, took a major step forward in that fight — securing a real prison sentence for someone who spread fabricated videos about one of its artists, while also opening a fresh legal front to protect member Jang Won Young.

What STARSHIP Announced

On September 9, STARSHIP confirmed that a defendant previously indicted for distributing fabricated videos targeting one of its artists has now been sentenced to imprisonment by the court. The case was handled through the agency’s legal counsel, and STARSHIP made clear it intends to pursue accountability to the fullest extent of the law under its zero-tolerance approach to serious violations against its artists’ rights.

Alongside that update, the agency revealed it has filed additional criminal complaints against individuals — including certain YouTube channels and so-called “cyber wreckers” — who have repeatedly posted and spread false, distorted, or malicious content specifically targeting Jang Won Young.

Why This Case Goes Beyond a Single Video

What stands out in STARSHIP’s statement is the scope of the ongoing effort. The agency isn’t just targeting the original creators of harmful content — it says it’s actively monitoring and pursuing legal action against anyone who reposts or redistributes the same false claims, even after the facts have already been publicly clarified. That includes footage that’s been selectively edited or taken out of context to manufacture a misleading narrative about the idol’s character or conduct.

STARSHIP also emphasized that anonymity or the use of overseas platforms won’t shield offenders from consequences, noting it will pursue legal procedures regardless of whether accounts are domestic or international in order to identify and hold distributors accountable.

A Broader Pattern in the Industry

This isn’t an isolated incident — K-pop agencies have increasingly turned to the courts in recent years as online harassment, deepfakes, and defamation campaigns against idols have grown more sophisticated and persistent. STARSHIP’s approach here, combining a completed criminal case with fresh complaints filed the same day, signals an effort to stay ahead of repeat offenders rather than simply reacting case by case.

For fans following IVE and the broader K-pop industry, the message from the agency is consistent: legal consequences for online harassment are real, and the company plans to keep pursuing them.
