Why Do Cricketers Spit So Much on the Field? The Real Reason Behind Cricket’s Strangest Habit

Watch any international match and you’ll spot it within minutes — a fielder spitting on the ground, a bowler working saliva into the ball’s seam. To newcomers, it looks bizarre. To cricket fans, it’s just Tuesday. So why do cricketers spit so much on the field? The answer is part science, part old habit, and part simple biology.

It All Comes Down to Shining the Ball

Fielding teams spend hours trying to keep one side of the ball glossy while the other roughens naturally — a contrast that helps bowlers generate swing. For decades, saliva mixed with sweat was the go-to polish: rubbed onto the shiny side, then buffed against the trousers to smooth out grime and moisture.

The Habit That Outlived the Rule

Here’s the twist — saliva on the ball has actually been banned since 2020. The International Cricket Council introduced the rule as a COVID-19 hygiene measure, and it was later made permanent. Sweat is still allowed and does a similar job. Yet the broader habit of spitting on the ground — not the ball — never really went away. It’s less about ball maintenance now and more a leftover reflex from years of on-field conditioning.

Cricketers Spit: Updates

Just a Byproduct of Hard Physical Work

Fielders spend hours sprinting and standing under hot, humid conditions — sometimes across five full days in a Test match. Dry mouth and the urge to clear saliva during intense exertion is common across nearly every outdoor sport; cricket just offers far more hours on the field for it to show.

The Takeaway

Spitting started as a functional part of shining the cricket ball and has since become mostly an unconscious habit shaped by long hours of physical exertion — even though saliva on the ball itself has been officially banned since 2020.
