Mohan Raja’s Next Karthi Film: A Blend of Two Cult Classics Is Coming

Karthi and director Mohan Raja are teaming up again — and this time, they’re mixing two of Tamil cinema’s most loved hits into one film.

Just days ahead of Sardar 2‘s theatrical release, director Mohan Raja dropped a fascinating update about his upcoming project with Karthi — and it’s got fans buzzing already.

What Mohan Raja Revealed

Speaking at the trailer launch of Sardar 2, Raja shared that his next film with Karthi will draw inspiration from two of the actor’s most iconic outings — blending the intense action energy of Thani Oruvan with the heartfelt family charm of M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi. He also confirmed the shoot is expected to roll out around December 2026 or January 2027, and expressed genuine excitement about returning to Tamil cinema after a long gap, crediting Karthi for making it happen.

Karthi : Overview

Why This Combo Is Exciting

Pairing the gritty, high-stakes tone of Thani Oruvan with the warm, family-drama sensibility of M. Kumaran Son of Mahalakshmi is a bold creative choice — one that suggests Raja wants to blend mass action with emotional depth. Details on the female lead and full cast are still under wraps, but industry buzz points to either Trisha Krishnan or Nayanthara joining the project.

What’s Keeping Karthi Busy Right Now

Karthi’s plate is already full. He was last seen in Vaa Vaathiyaar, a film where his character channels the spirit of an MGR-inspired icon while standing up against injustice, alongside Krithi Shetty, Sathyaraj, and Rajkiran.

Up next is Sardar 2, the much-anticipated sequel to the 2022 hit Sardar, directed by PS Mithran. Karthi reprises his dual roles as father and son, going up against SJ Suryah’s antagonist, alongside Malavika Mohanan, Rajisha Vijayan, and Ashika Ranganath. The film releases in theaters on September 10, 2026.

Beyond that, Karthi is also wrapping up his untitled project with director Kalyan Shankar (tentatively called Karthi30) and has Marshal, co-starring Kalyani Priyadarshan, lined up as well.

The Bigger Picture

With multiple high-profile projects stacking up, Karthi is clearly having one of his busiest and most diverse phases yet — jumping between action thrillers, family dramas, and now a genre-blending experiment with Mohan Raja. For fans of Tamil cinema, this is shaping up to be a stacked couple of years.
