Bridgerton Season 5: Author’s Set Visit Hints at a Truly Beautiful Season Ahead

Production on Bridgerton season 5 is in full swing, and fresh details are finally trickling out from behind the scenes. Between a glowing set report from the books’ author, new cast additions, and a bittersweet update on a fan-favorite star, here’s everything currently known about the show’s next chapter.

Bridgerton : A Warm Set and High Praise From the Source

Julia Quinn, author of the novels the series is based on and an executive producer on the show, recently wrapped a two-day visit to the production’s London studio. While she couldn’t share details or photos, she described the atmosphere as an unusually welcoming one for a TV set, noted the costumes as especially striking this season, and — having already read the scripts — teased that the season is shaping up to be visually stunning.

A Groundbreaking New Romance Takes Center Stage

Season 5, reportedly filming under the codename “New Cross,” will center on the show’s first queer female couple: Francesca and Michaela. According to a recent Shondaland feature, the storyline follows Francesca — described as the most reserved of the Bridgerton siblings — discovering a mutual attraction with Michaela that pushes her to explore a desire she hasn’t experienced before, navigated against the backdrop of Regency society.

New cast additions tied to this storyline include Tega Alexander as Christopher Anderson, Michaela’s charming acquaintance; Jacqueline Boatswain as Michaela’s mother, Helen Stirling; and Gemma Knight Jones as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, a close confidante guiding Michaela through London society.

A Bittersweet Update on Penelope

Nicola Coughlan, who plays Penelope Bridgerton, confirmed she’s stepping back into a reduced role for season 5 while she juggles other major projects, including Only Murders in the Building and Netflix’s upcoming Roald Dahl adaptation. She described the reduced screen time as a mixed feeling, but reassured fans she’ll return to the Bridgerton world whenever the show wants her back.

Smaller Roles Rounding Out the Cast

A handful of supporting actors have also reportedly joined the season, including Natasha Joseph as Lady Gant, Elena Saurel as Miss Ortiz, Declan O’Connor as Lord Paiva, and Tre Jordan Holmes as Lord Woods. Netflix hasn’t officially confirmed these smaller roles, so it remains to be seen how much screen time each character ultimately gets.

Why This Season Feels Different

A queer female love story anchoring a season is new territory for Bridgerton, and pairing that shift with such enthusiastic early praise from the franchise’s own author suggests season 5 could mark a meaningful turning point for the show creatively, not just narratively.
