Habeas Corpus Netflix Release Date, Cast, and Plot: Everything You Need to Know

Netflix is stepping into gripping legal-drama territory with Habeas Corpus, a Brazilian Portuguese-language series inspired by real wrongful-conviction cases. If courtroom thrillers with an emotional core are your thing, this one deserves a spot on your watchlist.

When Does Habeas Corpus Release?

Netflix has confirmed the show drops globally on September 23, 2026. The series is created by Leonardo Moreira (who also directs) along with Donna Oliveira, and produced by Café Royal under executive producer Adriana Tavares.

What’s the Story About?

The plot follows Inez, a law professor running a wrongful-conviction review group trying to free a young man wrongly imprisoned. Her star student Marina, however, has a hidden motive — a personal injustice from her own family’s past. As the case unfolds, secrets, power imbalances, and moral dilemmas collide, keeping viewers guessing until the very end.

The series draws real-world inspiration from Innocence Project-style organizations working to overturn wrongful convictions — a cause that has freed countless innocent people worldwide.

Why It’s Worth Watching

Legal dramas rooted in true injustice always hit different — think tension, emotion, and a slow-burn mystery rolled into one. With a strong female-led cast and a socially conscious storyline, Habeas Corpus could become Netflix’s next big Brazilian hit, following the success of other Latin American originals.
