OnePlus 16 Display Leak: Custom BOE X4 Panel Claims to Beat Samsung’s Best

The OnePlus 16 might be about to deliver its biggest display upgrade yet, and this time OnePlus isn’t just chasing Samsung’s numbers — it’s reportedly claiming to beat them outright. A new leak from a well-regarded tipster paints a picture of a genuinely ambitious panel built specifically for the phone.

OnePlus 16 Display Leak: What’s Being Claimed

Where This Leak Comes From

The details trace back to Digital Chat Station, a well-established tipster with a solid track record on Chinese smartphone leaks, posting on Weibo in mid-August 2026. According to the leak, OnePlus and display maker BOE jointly developed this new X4 light-emitting material specifically for the OnePlus 16, rather than sourcing an off-the-shelf panel.

Worth flagging clearly: the claim that the X4 panel beats Samsung’s M-series displays comes from internal OnePlus testing, as relayed by the tipster — it’s not an independent third-party benchmark, and no specific numbers for brightness, contrast, or color accuracy have surfaced yet to back up the comparison.

What’s Actually Confirmed vs. Still Rumored

This is where it gets interesting: OnePlus China president Li Jie has directly confirmed the 185Hz refresh rate himself, along with two carried-over gaming features from the OnePlus 15 — the Fengchi gaming engine and e-sports triple-core technology. That’s a genuine, on-record confirmation, not just tipster speculation.

Everything else — the X4 material claims, the bezel improvements, the Samsung comparison, and the exact power/lifespan figures — remains unconfirmed leak territory. The OnePlus 16 has also reportedly cleared SRRC certification in China under model number PYB110, a step that typically signals a launch isn’t far off.

Why the Samsung Comparison Matters

Samsung Display has held a dominant position at the top of the mobile panel market for years, supplying screens for a wide range of premium Android flagships. If OnePlus’s claims genuinely hold up under independent testing, it would mark a notable shift — though it’s also worth noting Samsung is reportedly preparing its own next-generation M-series material for upcoming devices like the Galaxy S27 series, meaning any advantage BOE’s X4 panel has now could be short-lived once Samsung’s next display generation ships.

The OnePlus 16 is expected to launch in China around October, likely alongside Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 Pro chipset, though it’s expected to remain a China-exclusive release rather than a global launch. You can track official confirmations via OnePlus’s official website.

Bottom Line

The OnePlus 16’s display upgrade looks genuinely promising on paper, with a confirmed 185Hz refresh rate and credible sourcing behind the BOE X4 claims. But the headline “beats Samsung” comparison is still an OnePlus-reported internal claim without independent verification — worth getting excited about, but also worth waiting for real-world testing before crowning a new display champion.
