For the first time ever, Apple’s AI, Siri will be available on third-party devices. The Cupertino giant announced that in their annual WWDC.
What does this mean for users? First, you will now be able to key in requests to smart devices from other brands through voice requests. Apple has assured that this will not compromise upon the users’ privacy and have the same level of protection as when using Siri on Apple devices.
To demonstrate this, the keynote presentation featured Siri controlling a smart thermostat directly. No additional details were provided in the presentation, but it is most likely done through an MFi-style licensing chip or could be a part of the Matter alliance(previously known as CHIP).
However, in order to get Matter’s certification, Apple will first have to prove that the product can adopt a new royalty-free standard that will render it compatible with Amazon’s Alexa Smart Home and Google’s weave protocols in addition to the current compatibility with Apple’s HomeKit.
The alliance embraces devices such as door locks, video door-bells and smart speakers.
