Netflix’s ‘Conversations with a Killer’ Ends Its Run With Its Most Chilling Subject Yet

Netflix’s long-running true-crime series Conversations with a Killer is closing out its final chapter, and it’s saving its most culturally significant subject for last: Charles Manson. Directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Joe Berlinger, the three-part documentary drops August 12, exploring the cult leader whose crimes reshaped how America consumes true crime altogether.

Conversations with a Killer: Overview

Why Manson, and Why Now?

Unlike the traditional serial killers profiled in earlier seasons, Manson never personally committed the 1969 murders he’s infamous for — he orchestrated them through the group of followers known as the Manson Family, with actress Sharon Tate among the victims. His 1971 conviction and the media frenzy that followed made him one of the most defining criminal cases of the 20th century, and Berlinger considers him a fitting way to close out the franchise given his outsized influence on true-crime culture.

Berlinger has said the goal wasn’t to add another layer to Manson’s mythology, but to examine the systems of control he built while giving voice to those who lived through it and are still processing its aftermath.

What’s Inside the Documentary

The series draws on previously unheard prison phone recordings of Manson himself, along with interviews featuring former Manson Family members, law enforcement officials, and journalists who covered the case as it unfolded. It’s the same format that’s made the franchise a staple of Netflix’s true-crime library — deep archival access paired with firsthand testimony rather than dramatized recreation.

The End of an Era for Netflix True Crime

Since launching with The Ted Bundy Tapes in 2019, Conversations with a Killer has become one of Netflix’s most consistent true-crime franchises, tackling some of America’s most notorious criminals one season at a time. Wrapping the series with Manson gives it a symbolic full-circle moment, closing on the figure many credit with kickstarting the public’s modern fascination with true crime in the first place.
