Marvel Studios just dropped one of the biggest casting bombshells in years — David Jonsson is officially stepping into the Black Panther mantle, and here’s everything you need to know about him and what’s next for Wakanda.

At Marvel Studios’ Hall H panel during San Diego Comic-Con, director Ryan Coogler confirmed that David Jonsson will lead Black Panther 3, playing Prince T’Challa II — the grown son of the late King T’Challa and Nakia (Lupita Nyong’o). The character was first introduced as a young child in the post-credits scene of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Jonsson’s casting suggests a significant time jump for the threequel, given he’s an adult actor stepping into a role last seen as a child.

Rather than recasting Chadwick Boseman’s original T’Challa, Marvel chose to continue his legacy through his son — a move that lets the studio honor Boseman’s memory while introducing a new generation of Wakandan leadership. Boseman passed away from colon cancer in 2020, after which Letitia Wright’s Shuri took up the Black Panther mantle in Wakanda Forever.
