Jermain Defoe Leaves Woking: Jermain Defoe has parted ways with Woking FC just two weeks before the new National League season kicks off, marking a quick end to his time as manager. The club confirmed this mutual decision on Thursday, July 23, 2026, leaving them searching for a new manager right before their opening match against Sutton United on August 8.

Defoe’s time at Woking lasted four months, during which he managed six league games, achieving two wins, three draws, and one defeat. He called his first managerial role an “eye-opening experience,” emphasizing the challenges he faced and the lessons he learned during his brief spell at the club.

“Unfortunately, circumstances have ultimately made it impossible for me to continue in the position,” Defoe shared on social media. He expressed pride in the work they accomplished, believing they were on the verge of creating something special.

Defoe’s exit comes at a pivotal moment. After taking over on March 29, 2026, he guided Woking through the rest of the previous season.

His resignation follows a recent friendly match where the team reportedly lost 1-0 to Braintree Town. The club thanked Defoe for his contributions and wished him well in future endeavors, highlighting their dedication to achieving their goals on and off the pitch.

This sudden departure raises questions about Woking’s management strategy as they gear up for the new season. Known for its rich history in the National League, the club will need to find a suitable replacement quickly. For now, the focus is on stabilizing the squad and maintaining the momentum built under Defoe, despite this abrupt leadership change. For more detail, see BBC Sport.

Defoe, a former England international with 57 caps and 162 goals in the Premier League, previously worked with the Tottenham academy and earned his UEFA A-licence. His role at Woking was meant to be a stepping stone, but the challenges he faced seem to have led to an early exit.

As Woking looks forward, they now need to find a new leader who can navigate the competitive National League. With their season opener against Sutton United fast approaching, the club’s management is racing against time to secure a replacement who can instill confidence and tactical direction within the squad.

Woking’s supporters, eagerly awaiting the new season, will be paying close attention to how the club adapts to this sudden change in leadership. The next few weeks will be crucial as they strive to maintain their competitive edge in the league.

Defoe’s departure highlights the pressures and unpredictability of football management, especially at the lower tiers of the English football pyramid. His experience will likely influence his future endeavors as he aims to apply the valuable lessons learned during this challenging yet formative time.
