Christopher Nolan just carved out a permanent place in Indian box office history. “The Odyssey” has landed at #8 on the all-time list of biggest Hollywood opening weekends in India — an especially impressive feat given it isn’t part of any established franchise.
The Odyssey: Full Ranking
“The Odyssey” grossed Rs. 69 crore in its opening weekend, with Rs. 24 crore coming in on Sunday alone. That places it above heavyweights like “The Lion King” and “The Conjuring: Last Rites,” even though most films ranked above it belong to massive franchises like Marvel and Avatar.
| Rank | Title | Year | Opening Weekend Gross |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Avengers: Endgame | 2019 | Rs. 192.50 crore |
| 2 | Avatar: The Way of Water | 2022 | Rs. 154.75 crore |
| 3 | Avengers: Infinity War | 2018 | Rs. 122.00 crore |
| 4 | Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness | 2022 | Rs. 97.00 crore |
| 5 | Spider-Man: No Way Home | 2021 | Rs. 96.25 crore |
| 6 | Deadpool and Wolverine | 2024 | Rs. 78.75 crore |
| 7 | Avatar: Fire and Ash | 2025 | Rs. 77.00 crore |
| 8 | The Odyssey | 2026 | Rs. 69.00 crore |
| 9 | The Lion King | 2019 | Rs. 65.50 crore |
| 10 | The Conjuring: Last Rites | 2025 | Rs. 60.25 crore |
Why This Ranking Matters
Every film above “The Odyssey” belongs to an established franchise with built-in audience anticipation — Marvel, Avatar, Spider-Man, Deadpool. Nolan’s epic is the rare non-franchise title to break into this elite tier, a testament to his standing as a bankable name in Indian cinema discourse.
Interestingly, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” technically opened on a Thursday rather than Friday; had it followed a standard Friday release, estimates suggest its weekend would have hit Rs. 110-115 crore, potentially placing it 4th on this list instead.
All eyes now turn to “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which is already showing strong advance sales ahead of its own debut.
