India’s First Hydrogen Train Is Here — And PM Modi Is Flagging It Off

India just took a major leap toward green rail travel. PM Modi is set to inaugurate the country’s first hydrogen-powered trainset on the Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, marking a milestone moment for sustainable public transport and Indian Railways’ clean-energy ambitions.

What Makes This Hydrogen Train Special

Built by Indian Railways with an investment of Rs 89 crore, this isn’t just another diesel train swapped for a green label — it runs on genuine hydrogen fuel-cell technology, producing only water vapour as exhaust. A dedicated hydrogen production and refuelling facility has been set up right at Jind to keep the train running daily.

Why It Matters

This project positions India among a handful of nations experimenting with hydrogen-powered rail — a segment still dominated by countries like Germany and Japan. It supports India’s broader push toward net-zero emissions and reduced fossil fuel dependence, while offering a practical alternative for routes where full electrification isn’t feasible. If the Jind-Sonipat pilot succeeds, similar hydrogen trains could roll out across other non-electrified stretches of the network.
