The Whisper Man: Robert De Niro and Adam Scott Team Up for Netflix’s Creepiest New Thriller

A missing child. A decades-old serial killer. A father and son forced to work together despite years of estrangement. Netflix’s upcoming thriller “The Whisper Man” has all the makings of a genuinely unsettling watch — and now that production has wrapped, fans finally have a release date, trailer, and full cast list to dig into.

Based on Alex North’s New York Times bestselling novel, the film follows Tom, a widowed crime writer whose eight-year-old son is abducted. Desperate for answers, Tom turns to his estranged father, a retired detective who once caught the original “Whisper Man” — a serial killer named Frank Carter — three decades earlier. With Carter still behind bars, the terrifying question becomes: how is he killing again?

The Whisper Man: Overview

The first trailer leans hard into dread, opening with a chilling nursery rhyme warning that leaving a door or window unlatched invites the Whisper Man in. From there, it builds tension fast — Tom’s search for his son leads to a diner meeting with his father, played by Robert De Niro, before the footage ends on a newly discovered cassette tape hinting the nightmare is far from over.

Adam Scott, known for “Severance” and “Parks and Recreation,” takes on the role of Tom, while Michelle Monaghan plays Amanda Beck, the sharp detective piecing together the case’s disturbing new connections. The cast also includes Hamish Linklater, Owen Teague, and young newcomer Acston Luca Porto as Tom’s son, Jake.

Behind the camera, the project comes from AGBO, the production company founded by Anthony and Joe Russo, best known for their work on the Marvel Cinematic Universe before shifting into original thrillers. Director James Ashcroft, known for the acclaimed horror film “Coming Home in the Dark,” helms this adaptation, bringing his signature slow-burn tension to the material.

Filming took place across New Jersey earlier this year, with the crew spotted at multiple locations including Paterson City Hall and a historic building in Montclair. The film draws from a broader tradition of literary psychological thriller storytelling, where dread builds as much from character as from plot.
