Star City Ending Explained: Valya’s Sacrifice And Humanity’s Secret Trip To Venus

Some heroes get parades. Valya Mironov got a smile on a dying planet, and a mission the world will never be allowed to know he completed.

Is Valya Dead?

Apple TV+’s For All Mankind spinoff Star City confirms in its Season 1 finale that Valya Mironov dies after sacrificing himself to save the Venera mission, allowing crewmates Sasha Polivanov and Lakshmi Chadha to make it back to Earth.

How Does Valya Die?

After a fire caused by forced depressurization knocks their spacecraft off course, the crew realizes they lack the fuel to make it back to Earth. The only fix is to manually fire the engine on the bathysphere, a vessel meant to land on Venus, not carry a person. Valya volunteers for the one-way trip, locks himself inside, and successfully corrects Venera’s trajectory. As the bathysphere touches down on the planet’s surface, Valya looks out and smiles, becoming the first human on Venus in the moments before the planet’s crushing pressure ends his life.

What Happens To The Rest Of The Crew?

Sasha and Lakshmi make it back to Earth, but their survival puts them squarely at odds with the Soviet Union, which had publicly declared them dead. A plan to land safely in Finland is compromised, and Colonel Lyudmilla Raskova orders a missile strike to force their landing back onto Soviet soil. Lakshmi ultimately escapes to Finland, while Sasha chooses to stay behind and help Anastasia Belikova, who risked her own freedom to save him. Both are taken into Soviet custody, along with Sergei Nikulov and the Chief Designer, who face arrest for helping redirect the spacecraft.

Star City: Bigger Picture

The finale reveals a devastating irony: the Soviet space program achieved something historic by reaching Venus, yet the secrecy surrounding the mission means the accomplishment can never be publicly celebrated. The ending closes several arcs while leaving plenty of open threads, hinting strongly at a potential Season 2.
