A New Chip Shortage Is Coming — And 2027 Could Be the Worst Year Ever

Remember when you couldn’t find a GPU during COVID? Brace yourself. The world’s second-largest memory chipmaker just issued a warning that makes the 2021 chip crisis look like a warm-up act.

SK Hynix’s CEO Just Said the Quiet Part Out Loud

On July 10, 2026 — the same day SK Hynix made its historic Nasdaq debut — CEO Kwak Noh-jung sat down with Reuters and dropped a bombshell. According to Reuters, he said the global memory industry is on track for its worst-ever supply shortage in 2027.

And the problem doesn’t stop there. Even with factories running at full throttle and billions being poured into new facilities, he believes customer demand will stay above supply capacity beyond 2030.

“Our customer demand continues to go up, while our capacity has limitations,” Kwak told reporters. That’s an understatement.

The root cause? AI. Specifically, the explosion in demand for High-Bandwidth Memory (HBM) — the type of ultra-fast memory that powers Nvidia’s AI chips. SK Hynix is currently Nvidia’s largest HBM supplier, and Jensen Huang himself recently confirmed that memory shortages will persist for years.

What’s at Stake — And Who Gets Hit

This isn’t just a problem for data centers. If memory supply tightens this severely, the ripple effect touches almost everything with a chip inside it.

SectorImpact
AI & Data CentersHBM supply crunch limits AI model training and inference
SmartphonesLPDDR5 shortages could push up handset prices
Laptops & PCsRAM pricing may spike, hitting mid-range build budgets
GamingGPU VRAM availability and pricing under pressure
Consumer ElectronicsBroader component costs rise across categories

UBS analysts expect the global DRAM market to remain undersupplied until at least Q2 2028. Micron, meanwhile, has pledged over $250 billion in US investment through 2035 to try and close the gap — a sign of how serious the industry considers this threat.

If you’ve been following our coverage on PC build pricing trends in India, this is exactly the kind of macro factor that could push component costs up significantly through 2027.

India Isn’t Immune Either

For Indian smartphone and laptop buyers, a prolonged chip shortage means fewer budget-tier options and slower refresh cycles. The flagship smartphone segment in India — already seeing upward price pressure — could feel this more acutely as OEMs compete for limited memory allocations.

SK Hynix is building new capacity across South Korea, Indiana (US), and evaluating additional sites in Japan and Southeast Asia. But chip fabs take 3–5 years to go from groundbreaking to production. The math simply doesn’t work in consumers’ favour for now.

The Bottom Line

The AI boom is eating memory faster than the industry can make it. SK Hynix’s CEO has been unusually candid about a problem that most executives would downplay. If 2027 is as bad as predicted, expect price hikes, longer wait times, and real supply constraints across tech — from your next phone to the next wave of AI models.

The chip shortage isn’t a warning anymore. It’s a forecast.
