India loses World No.1 Spot to England after another clean sweep

Some defeats sting more than others. For Team India, this one arrived with a crown attached — England didn’t just beat them, they dethroned them, ending India’s remarkable 1,605-day reign as the world’s No. 1 T20I side with a historic 4-0 series whitewash.

A New Low Under Gambhir

India had never lost four T20I matches in a bilateral series before this humbling tour of England. The batters struggled to adapt to bouncy English conditions for the first four games, while the bowling and fielding fell apart completely in the final match at Southampton, where Jos Buttler and Harry Brook’s 200-plus stand sealed the rout.

By the Numbers

A Pattern of Slides

This wasn’t an isolated slip. India also lost recent ODI series to Sri Lanka and New Zealand under Gambhir’s tenure, on top of the T20I whitewash, deepening scrutiny on the coaching setup less than a year after his appointment.

What’s Next

With England reclaiming top spot and pride firmly dented, questions now turn to whether the Gambhir-Iyer partnership can course-correct before India’s next assignment. For full ICC rankings and updates, fans can check the official ICC website.
