Some family reunions arrive right on schedule. Others crash through the front door uninvited. Apple TV’s beloved comedy “Trying” returns for Season 5 with exactly the second kind, as Princess and Tyler’s biological mother resurfaces just as Nikki and Jason thought they’d found stability.
Where Trying Season 5 Picks Up
Episode 1, titled “Rollercoaster,” continues the fallout from Nikki’s lie about Kat, whose sudden arrival throws the family’s routine into an emotional mess. Princess already knows Nikki met her biological mother, and Kat’s appearance at the doorstep makes everything harder to process for everyone involved.
What Kat’s Return Means For Everyone
| Character | How They’re Affected |
|---|---|
| Nikki | Feels she’s losing control of the stable life she built with Jason |
| Jason | Stays outwardly calm but recognizes Kat is no longer just a name from the past |
| Princess | Curious, hurt, and confused; starts questioning her own identity |
| Kat | Not framed as a villain, just a disruption to a family that has already moved on |
By the episode’s end, Princess is caught between anger at Nikki’s lie and a genuine need to understand who Kat is, marking a shift where she starts processing things on her own terms rather than simply reacting to her parents’ choices.
A Softer Season Overall
Despite the tense premiere setup, this season reportedly eases off some of the show’s usual pressure, with Nikki’s anxiety over Kat’s emergence largely resolved within the first episode itself, leaving room for lighter storylines like Jason returning to school in his 40s to become a social worker.
