Dada Is Here: Rajkummar Rao Becomes Sourav Ganguly, And Fans Are Losing It

Some birthdays get a cake. Sourav Ganguly’s birthday just got a movie poster — and it’s giving every 90s cricket fan full-body goosebumps.

To mark Dada’s special day, the makers of Dada: The Sourav Ganguly Story dropped the first look, recreating arguably the most iconic celebration in Indian cricket: Ganguly ripping off his shirt and swinging it from the Lord’s balcony after India stunned England in the 2002 NatWest Series final. If that moment lives rent-free in your memory, this poster will hit different.

Rajkummar Rao steps into the role, and it’s fast becoming his calling card — vanishing into real people so completely you forget he’s acting. Reactions online are split, though: some fans are thrilled, others feel the transformation “needs more work.” Either way, the internet is talking.

Ganguly didn’t just win matches — he rebuilt a team’s spine, turning a soft-natured Indian side into one that stared down the world’s best. Recreating the Lord’s balcony moment isn’t fan service; it’s recreating folklore. With Vikramaditya Motwane directing and a Bhushan Kumar-T-Series backing, this project already carries serious pedigree.

Rao, known for disappearing into real-life roles, is expected to have trained extensively to nail Ganguly’s stance and mannerisms — because nothing less will satisfy a country that remembers every frame of the original.
