India eyed this series as the first chapter of Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy storyline — India’s 15th T20I skipper taking charge with the road to the T20 World Cup 2028 and the LA Olympics ahead. Instead, India and Iyer have started the chapter on the worst possible note.
Ireland set 182 on the board. The question was never if India would chase it — it was in how many overs. That’s what makes what followed so stunning.
The Batting Collapse That Shocked Indian Cricket
Ireland’s debutant Jai Moondra — a Rajasthan-born pacer — sent Sanju Samson back on the very first ball. The other debutant, Matthew Hollard, took his maiden international scalp off his second ball and eventually claimed the Player of the Match award with a superb spell of 3/28.
Barring Abhishek Sharma, none of India’s batters adapted to the conditions. Ishan Kishan went for a wild hoick without reading the bounce. Prasidh Krishna — The Death Bowling Crisis Continues
Prasidh Krishna had an evening to forget. His figures of 0/57 from four overs didn’t just hurt — they shifted the game’s momentum completely. His final over read 4, 1, 4, 6, 6, 6 as Gareth Delany launched a stunning assault at the death.
In his last four T20Is, Prasidh has returned figures of 1/50, 3/41, 0/68 and now 0/57 — conceding runs at an economy rate of 13.50. Three dropped catches — from Shivam Dube, Abhishek Sharma, and Washington Sundar — handed Ireland lifelines they gleefully accepted.
Ireland have now beaten India in a T20I for the first time in history. And India have now lost their first match after winning a Men’s T20 World Cup for the second time in succession.
