Netflix Just Put Live TV Inside Netflix — And France Got It First

For the first time ever, Netflix is streaming someone else’s TV channels. Starting this Friday, French subscribers can flip on live broadcasts from TF1, TMC, TFX, TF1 Séries Films, and LCI — all without leaving the Netflix app. It’s a genuine first for the platform, and it could be a test run for the rest of the world.

Why Netflix Is Suddenly Acting Like Cable

This isn’t a random experiment. TF1 Group CEO Rodolphe Bellmer pointed out that Netflix’s roughly 15 million French subscribers watch very little traditional TV — so folding TF1’s channels directly into the app is a way to recapture viewing time the broadcaster was otherwise losing. For Netflix, it adds something it has never offered before: programming it doesn’t have to produce or license individually, plus a steady stream of recommendable new content for French users’ homepages.

It’s also not happening in a vacuum. Prime Video already carries France Télévisions in the country, and Disney+ recently added the sports channel L’Équipe — so this is increasingly just how streaming works in France now. If Netflix’s bigger ambition is reshaping how people discover content through its homepage, baking in live broadcast TV is the next logical step.

For now, the rollout is France-only and Smart TV/mobile-app only — the web version doesn’t show the TF1+ corner yet, and 24/7 niche channels haven’t made the jump either. There’s also a quiet opt-out: subscribers can disable the TF1+ corner per profile in settings, which removes it from recommendations (though it’ll still surface in search).
