Twelve years is a long time to wait for a sequel, but Hollywood’s favorite undercover bromance is finally getting a third outing. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum are back on the beat with 24 Jump Street — and yes, fans are already asking the obvious question: what happened to 23? The Hollywood Reporter
24 Jump Street: Big News
“24 Jump Street” is in the works, with stars Jonah Hill, Channing Tatum and Ice Cube in talks to return for the third installment in the R-rated crime comedy franchise. Rodney Rothman, known for Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, will direct the film and co-wrote the script with Hill and Meghan Malloy. Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who directed the first two films, return as producers alongside Neal H. Moritz. Variety + 2
Why Skip “23”?
The internet’s favorite mystery has a delightfully meta answer. Producer Neal Moritz shared the script’s title page on Instagram with the caption “It took so long to make, we had to skip one”. There’s history here too: 22 Jump Street’s end-credits famously poked fun at endless sequels with a montage of increasingly absurd undercover missions, and a third installment called “23 Jump Street” had been in development at Sony since 2016 as a crossover with Men in Black, a project Tatum once called the best script he’d ever read for a third movie. What Fans Can Expect?
The original 21 Jump Street followed Schmidt and Jenko, two underachieving cops going undercover at a high school to bust a drug ring, while the sequel sent them to college, with Ice Cube playing their no-nonsense Captain Dickson. With Rothman now in the director’s chair and Lord and Miller staying on as producers, expect the franchise’s signature self-aware humor to remain front and center — just aimed at a whole new “undercover assignment.” Variety
