Primate Movie Review: Killer Chimp Horror & Where to Stream It

He used to be the family pet. Now he’s the thing they’re hiding from.

Primate — Paramount’s lean, mean killer-chimp horror film — launched 2026 with one of January’s most surprising critical receptions, and it has since found a devoted audience of horror fans who went in sceptical and came out genuinely rattled.

Directed by Johannes Roberts (The Strangers: Prey at Night), the film follows college student Lucy (Johnny Sequoyah), who returns to her Hawaii home for summer, only for the family’s beloved pet chimpanzee Ben to be bitten by a rabid animal — and paradise to become a slaughterhouse. Inspired by Stephen King’s Cujo, the premise sounds like camp. The execution is anything but.

Primate Movie Review

Our Verdict

★★★★☆ (4/5)

Primate earns its reputation as one of 2026’s best January horror releases by doing exactly what it promises — and refusing to apologise for any of it. The 89-minute runtime is surgical. The gore is practical and genuinely inventive. And the decision to cast Oscar winner Troy Kotsur as Lucy’s deaf father adds a layer of specific, breathless dread that elevates the film well above its B-movie premise.

The film uses Ben’s former-beloved-pet status as its emotional core — this is horror that hurts precisely because the monster was once trusted. Kim Newman of Empire Magazine put it plainly: it is Cujo with a chimp and a pool instead of a dog and a car, and it delivers good, gruesome business with a sense of fun.

Is it perfect? No. Some characters make decisions that test patience, and the ending divides opinion. But for horror fans seeking white-knuckle survival thrills in a sun-soaked setting — with a Stephen King cameo tucked in as a knowing wink — Primate absolutely delivers.

Watch it loud. Watch it at night. Don’t watch it alone.
