The herd is back — and they’re coming in hot! After a decade-long absence from the big screen, the beloved prehistoric gang has finally resurfaced. Disney and 20th Century Studios just dropped the first teaser trailer for Ice Age: Boiling Point, locking in a worldwide theatrical release date of February 5, 2027. Ice Age: Boiling Point is scheduled to be released in the United States by 20th Century Studios on February 5, 2027. The film will launch exclusively in theaters before eventually heading to streaming. Ice Age: Boiling Point will be in Australian cinemas on February 4, 2027.

Notably, the release timing has shifted. On November 8, 2024, it was officially revealed by Disney that Ice Age 6 is in the works, with a release date set for December 18, 2026, with the release date later being pushed back from December 18, 2026, to February 5, 2027, to avoid competition with Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three.

What the First Look Teaser Reveals

The teaser kicks off with explosive chaos. The Ice Age 6 teaser trailer begins with smoke billowing from a volcanic eruption, out of which the acorn-obsessed Scrat bursts out first, as always, frantically chasing an acorn, with the entire Herd following — Manny, Ellie, Diego, Sid, Buck, Crash, and Eddie being flung into the air.

The signature slapstick comedy is in full force. As particles from the eruption rain down, Manny takes the first hit, his trunk involuntarily swinging back and smacking Sid in the face, while Sid chokes on a bee that flies right into his mouth, spitting it out onto Diego’s face. Viewers finally get to see an acorn-snuggling Baby Scrat being ejected, after which the core cast members’ names are revealed, all of this happening while Carl Orff’s O Fortuna plays in the background.

A pleasant surprise for longtime fans: contrary to Seann William Scott’s previous statement that Crash and Eddie were not expected to appear in the film, both characters are featured in the teaser along with Scrat and Baby Scrat.

Ice Age: Boiling Point Plot — What’s It About?

While Disney is keeping detailed story points under wraps, the broad strokes are clear. Deadline reported that the film will be “a dinosaur-and-lava-filled madcap adventure that takes Manny, Sid, Diego, Ellie, and the rest of the herd to visit never-before-seen corners of the treacherous Lost World.”

The film marks a dramatic environmental shift for the franchise. This fiery sixth instalment ends a decade-long big-screen hiatus, blasting the beloved prehistoric herd out of the melting ice and straight into a dangerous, volcano-filled paradise, as a massive volcanic eruption blasts the herd out of the ice and forces them to survive a fiery, dinosaur-filled adventure in the Lost World.

According to some reports, new comedic voices are joining the herd. New additions to the herd include Jennifer Lopez, Keke Palmer, Adam Devine, Wanda Sykes and Nick Offerman, expanding the comedic roster.

Behind the Camera — A New Creative Team

This installment marks a major behind-the-scenes transition for the franchise. Former Blue Sky producer John C. Donkin was officially announced as the director of the film, after having previously directed The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

Importantly, it will be the first theatrical Ice Age film not to be produced by Blue Sky Studios, following its closure on April 10, 2021. The opening scene, featuring Scrat and Baby Scrat escaping a volcanic eruption, was screened, following which it was announced that Patrick Worlock would be joining Lori Forte as a producer.

A Risky but Nostalgic Bet for Disney

Reviving a dormant franchise after ten years is a calculated gamble. Disney is banking heavily on nostalgia, as the studio wants to see if a ten-year theatrical break can revitalise global interest in this multi-billion-dollar franchise.

The franchise’s box office history shows both massive highs and recent declines.

The highest-grossing Ice Age movie came in 2009 with the premiere of Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs, which earned $886 million at the global box office, and it just narrowly maintained its spot when its 2012 sequel, Continental Drift, debuted, which grossed $879 million. However, the original Ice Age movie that was released in 2002 grossed more than the 2016 sequel, Ice Age: Collision Course, which could signal that interest in the franchise is on the decline.

When Will the Full Trailer Arrive?

For now, fans will have to make do with the brief teaser. The first full-length trailer for the film will likely come closer to the end of 2026, when the release date is more imminent.
