Chennai, May 29, 2026 — The newly established Maran Group has officially entered India’s fast-growing microdrama space with the launch of KadhaiShorts, a mobile-first short-form drama platform built around vernacular storytelling and vertical, smartphone-native content.

Founded by Karan Dayanidhi Maran, son of former Union Minister Dayanidhi Maran, the platform debuts with Tamil-language content and signals an ambitious expansion roadmap that spans five additional languages within the current financial year.

What is Kadhai Shorts?

KadhaiShorts is a mobile-first microdrama platform offering “Kutti Series” — two-minute episodic dramas that reimagine the appeal of traditional television serials in a vertical, smartphone-friendly format. The name itself blends Kadhai (Tamil for story) with the short-form video idiom of Shorts, squarely positioning the platform at the intersection of regional storytelling and mobile-native entertainment.

The platform launches with over 100 commissioned projects across six genres, and plans to expand into Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Bengali by the end of FY 2026–27.

To drive adoption and make premium short-form content accessible, KadhaiShorts has introduced a pay-per-series model starting at just ₹20 — a strategic pricing decision aimed at capturing price-sensitive audiences in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities while building a direct consumer revenue stream.

The Vision: “Not Here to Participate, Here to Lead”

Karan Dayanidhi Maran, Vice Chairman of Maran Group and Founder of KadhaiShorts, made the platform’s intentions clear at launch:

“We see micro-drama not as a passing trend, but as the next major entertainment format built for mobile-only consumption. With KadhaiShorts, we are not entering this space to participate. We are entering it to lead.”

The launch puts the Maran family back in the media spotlight and comes months after a reported truce in the long-running dispute between Dayanidhi Maran and his elder brother Kalanithi Maran, chairman of Sun Group — one of South India’s largest media conglomerates.

Beyond Ads: Native Brand Integration as a Revenue Model

KadhaiShorts is not banking solely on consumer transactions. The platform is actively exploring storytelling-led brand integration — embedding brands into narrative environments in ways that complement storylines rather than interrupt them.

This approach mirrors the broader industry shift toward native advertising within digital content, especially in a format where traditional pre-roll ads risk heavy skip rates given the 90-to-120-second episode length.

KadhaiClub: Building India’s Vertical Content Creator Community

Alongside the platform, Maran Group has unveiled KadhaiClub, a creator development initiative that already boasts 12,000+ members. The programme aims to provide aspiring writers, actors, editors, cinematographers, directors, and content creators with learning opportunities, collaboration tools, and pathways into the vertical content industry.

The company has set a target of generating more than 4,000 creative and production opportunities by March 2027, as it scales its content output and expands its library across languages.

Why This Launch Matters: India’s Microdrama Moment

KadhaiShorts enters a market that has been moving at breakneck speed. As of late 2025, microdrama apps in India crossed 250 million cumulative downloads, with five Indian platforms ranking among the country’s top 10 free entertainment apps. Three of the five most downloaded video streaming apps in 2025 were dedicated microdrama platforms — Kuku TV, Story TV, and Quick TV — signalling a consumption shift that is now impossible to ignore.

The timing is also notable because the space is beginning to attract serious corporate muscle. Jio recently launched Tadka, its own dedicated microdrama platform, while Zee5 has acquired Bullet and integrated it into its OTT ecosystem. Amazon MX Player’s MX Fatafat was the first big-budget mainstream OTT foray into the format. Major studios including Yash Raj Films and Red Chillies Entertainment are reported to be exploring the segment as well.

India’s microdrama market was valued at $300 million in 2025 and is projected to reach $4.5 billion by 2030.

Against that backdrop, KadhaiShorts’ regional-first approach — launching in Tamil before expanding to Telugu, Kannada, Malayalam, Hindi, and Bengali — is a calculated bet on the underserved South and East Indian language markets, where deep storytelling traditions and mobile-first consumption habits make for a potent combination.

Conclusion

KadhaiShorts is a platform worth watching closely for several reasons. First, the regional-language-first positioning is smart — it differentiates from Hindi-heavy competitors like Kuku TV while tapping into massive South Indian audiences who are historically underserved by mainstream microdrama platforms. Second, the ₹20 pay-per-series model is a genuinely novel pricing approach that could prove sticky in price-sensitive markets. Third, KadhaiClub’s creator-first ecosystem mirrors what made YouTube India and TVF powerful — building a creator supply chain from the ground up.

The challenge will be execution. The microdrama space is crowded, content fatigue is a real risk, and retention — not downloads — is where platforms win or die. But with Karan Dayanidhi Maran’s resources, a 100+ title launch slate, and a focused South Indian audience strategy, KadhaiShorts has more ingredients for success than most new entrants.

India’s microdrama story is just getting started. And now it has a new chapter — written in Tamil.
