Moon Freedom, KGB Fury: Why Anastasia’s Live Broadcast Broke the Soviet Script in Star City

Apple TV+’s Star City kicked off with a two-episode premiere that is already one of 2026’s most gripping space dramas — blending Cold War paranoia, feminist defiance, and Soviet propaganda into one explosive debut.

Star City is a spin-off of For All Mankind, set in an alternate 1960s where the Soviet space program wins the Moon race first. The show centres on Star City — the USSR’s secretive cosmonaut training base — and the ruthless KGB surveillance apparatus that controls it. If you love slow-burn political thrillers with emotional stakes, this one’s for you.

What happens in the Star City premiere?

Original lunar candidate Yana Akhmatova is yanked from the mission at the last minute — falsely accused of having ties to an American informant through her deceased brother. With no time to spare, Anastasia Belikova (Alice Englert) is thrust into the role after just three days of crash training.

Her spacewalk nearly kills her when her suit fills with carbon dioxide. Quick-thinking engineer Sergei Nikulov suggests a risky fix: puncture the suit with her antenna to release the gas. It works — barely. She lands on the Moon, breathless and awestruck.

Why did Anastasia break protocol on the Moon?

This is the moment the premiere pivots from thriller to something far more emotional. Anastasia was handed a pre-approved state speech to read live on global television. She starts reciting it — then falters. Standing on the lunar surface, she sees her own shadow and thinks of every woman who was erased, sidelined, or silenced to get her there.

She went off-script, thanked every woman who made her journey possible — and named Yana Akhmatova directly. The KGB cut the audio immediately.

The Moon, for the first time in her life, offered Anastasia something rare: no authoritarian figure watching her every word. That brief freedom was all she needed to finally say what she actually meant. It is one of the most quietly powerful scenes in recent prestige TV.

What happens after she returns?

Anastasia’s homecoming is anything but celebratory. Lyudmilla Raskova is waiting — along with a woman who looks eerily like Anastasia, a silent threat that she could be replaced with a more compliant lookalike at any moment. She is married off to fellow cosmonaut Sasha to keep her “manageable.” The state makes clear: she may be a hero publicly, but she is a prisoner privately. The Chief Designer also confirms she will never return to space — she is now too valuable as a propaganda symbol to risk losing.
