Netflix’s Most Ambitious Documentary of 2026 Asks the Question America Is Asking Itself Right Now — Can Democracy Survive?

With the United States turning 250 years old on July 4, 2026, Netflix isn’t just adding a few patriotic films to the queue. They’re dropping a full-scale, five-part cinematic documentary that tackles the country’s most uncomfortable contradictions — and the timing couldn’t feel more urgent.

The American Experiment — Everything You Need to Know

What Is The American Experiment About?

Netflix is celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States with a five-part historical documentary, The American Experiment, which reexamines the nation’s founding and the radical question at the center of the American Revolution: Can a people govern themselves?

The series explores how a nation built on an untested idea has continued to wrestle with the foundational contradictions of slavery and liberty, as well as individual power and minority representation, and delves into how American democracy has been built, challenged, and reimagined over the course of two and a half centuries.

The American Revolution, which gave birth to the United States in 1776, was itself a radical political experiment — and nearly 250 years later, this documentary asks whether that experiment is still working.

A Star-Studded, Bipartisan Roster of Voices

What makes The American Experiment genuinely compelling is who Netflix got to show up on camera. The series features a wide range of voices, including former vice presidents and cabinet officials, current and former members of Congress, a former Supreme Court justice, leading historians, tribal chiefs, military experts, and thought leaders across the political spectrum to present uniquely bipartisan and deeply informed conversations about the origins and future of American democracy.

Former vice presidents Al Gore, Mike Pence, and Kamala Harris, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, former associate Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, Senators Ted Cruz, Lisa Blunt Rochester, Rand Paul, and Ron Wyden, and U.S. Representatives Jamie Raskin and Zoe Lofgren are among the contributors — a lineup that spans the entire ideological spectrum and lends the series rare credibility. The series also features Martin Sheen as George Washington in cinematic reenactments — adding a dramatic, narrative texture to complement the talking-head interviews.

The Director Behind the Lens

The 5-part series is helmed by Brian Knappenberger, best known for his documentaries tackling some of the most pivotal and key moments in US history, including Turning Point: 9/11. Knappenberger is the ideal choice for a project of this scale — he understands how to balance historical sweep with contemporary relevance without losing the emotional thread that keeps audiences watching. Why Watch It Now?

Netflix’s VP of Documentary Adam Del Deo said: “The approaching 250th anniversary of the United States offers a distinct opportunity to reflect on America’s founding and its future. The American Experiment presents an expansive dialogue about how American democracy has been built, challenged, and reimagined over nearly two and a half centuries.” The Hollywood Reporter

In a moment of intense political polarisation, a documentary that features both Hillary Clinton and Ted Cruz in the same frame — genuinely grappling with the same foundational questions — feels less like a history lesson and more like a mirror. It drops on June 24, giving you exactly ten days to watch all five parts before America blows out 250 candles.
