Chhaava and Chandu Champion: A 2026 Look Back at These Hits

Chhaava — and Chandu Champion showcase two unique ways of telling biographical stories in recent Indian cinema. The 2025 epic broke box office records, while the 2024 drama Chandu Champion delved into intimate, character-driven athletic inspiration. Both films later found their way to Netflix, extending their reach to audiences nationwide.

Chhaava: and Its Record-Breaking Theatrical Journey

Directed by Laxman Utekar and produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, Chhaava marks a key moment in modern Bollywood history. Featuring Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika Mandanna as Yesubai, the film premiered on February 14, 2025. Its release strategy paid off handsomely, as the film reportedly grossed over ₹1,000 crore worldwide, making it one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2025.

Some critics suggest that focusing on grand historical themes can overshadow subtle acting performances. However, the box office numbers indicate a different trend; audiences are clearly drawn to grand historical narratives that offer both impressive production value and star power.

Chandu Champion: Resilience and Artistic Intent

Chandu Champion, directed by Kabir Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala through Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment, provides a contrasting cinematic experience. Starring Kartik Aaryan, it hit theaters on June 14, 2024. Unlike the grand scale of Chhaava, this film focused on the personal struggles of an athlete. Financial reports show that it earned around ₹50–60 crore net at the domestic box office.

Streaming platforms like Netflix are shaping future film projects. Both titles have found their primary home on Netflix, ensuring they remain available for audiences.

As we move into the rest of 2026, original biographical films, whether revolving around sports or historical figures, will continue to play a vital role in India’s film industry. Expect studios to keep focusing on high-concept stories that transition seamlessly from the big screen to home viewing.
