Perfect Crown Is Stirring Up Trouble: Plagiarism Claims, Historical Controversy & Why Fans Can’t Stop Comparing It to Lovely Runner

It was supposed to be the K-drama event of 2026. Instead, Perfect Crown — starring IU and Byeon Woo-seok on MBC and Disney+ — is making headlines for all the wrong reasons. From plagiarism accusations to a full-blown historical distortion scandal, here’s everything going down.

What Is Perfect Crown About?

Set in a 21st-century constitutional monarchy, Perfect Crown follows Seong Hui-ju — a wealthy chaebol heir who proposes a marriage contract to Grand Prince I-an to overcome the social stigma of her commoner, out-of-wedlock status. As the couple navigates political opposition from the Queen Dowager and the Prime Minister, their transactional alliance gradually evolves into romance. Wikipedia

On paper, it’s a dream project. IU came straight off When Life Gives You Tangerines and Byeon came straight off Lovely Runner, making this the most commercially loaded lead pairing in K-drama in years.

The Plagiarism & “No Originality” Backlash

Fans have been vocal online, accusing the show of recycling romance beats too familiar from Byeon Woo-seok’s breakout hit Lovely Runner. Several viewers noted that while the visuals are stunning and the palace backdrops breathtaking, the storyline feels shallow — and unlike both leads’ previous dramas, their chemistry falls flat with some romance scenes coming off as cringe-worthy.

Critics noted that Byeon’s role in Perfect Crown demanded more complex emotions than his previous work in Lovely Runner, with some viewers feeling he lacked the necessary delicacy, which ultimately affected the romantic chemistry. Wikipedia

The criticism goes beyond just tone — pop culture critic Kang Dae-ho described the series as a drama that uses its constitutional monarchy setting as a facade, arguing it relies on visual splendor and “status-based catharsis” rather than logical realism. Wikipedia

The Bigger Scandal: Historical Distortion

Just as the plagiarism noise was building, a more serious controversy exploded. Episode 11 faced criticism for depictions that made the drama’s fictional South Korea appear as if it were a vassal state of China. During the coronation of Grand Prince Ian, subjects shouted Cheonse (a thousand years) — a term used by vassal states — instead of Manse (ten thousand years), the symbol of an independent nation.

The production team later acknowledged that while the intersection of the fictional world and real historical contexts required careful consideration, they lacked the effort to scrutinise details more thoroughly.

On May 18, both IU and Byeon Woo-seok took to their personal Instagram accounts to personally apologize, with IU stating she should have read the script more carefully and studied more as an actor.

To understand the full weight of Korean historical symbolism at play here, Wikipedia’s entry on the Joseon dynasty provides excellent context.

Is Perfect Crown Worth Watching Despite the Drama?

Since its April 10 premiere, Perfect Crown has become a smash hit globally, earning Disney+’s biggest K-drama premiere to date. So clearly, not everyone is tuning out. Yahoo!

Even critical viewers have praised IU’s facial expressions and comedic timing, while noting it’s a shame two solid actors are wasted on a mediocre script. MyDramaList
