Lee Re’s Cold Gaze and All-Black Villain Energy in Strange Snack Shop Jeoncheondang Has Already Won the Internet

A snack shop that grants wishes. Lucky coins that trigger magical events. And a rival shop owner who deliberately stirs jealousy, desire, and chaos wherever she goes. Strange Snack Shop Jeoncheondang is shaping up to be one of the most intriguing Korean fantasy films of the year — and the first character stills of Lee Re as the villain Yomi have only deepened that anticipation.

The film hits theatres on May 29, 2026, and it’s already generating serious buzz.

What Is Strange Snack Shop Jeoncheondang?

The premise is as charming as it is mysterious. Jeoncheondang is a snack store with a magical secret — when customers arrive carrying lucky coins, their wishes get granted. It’s the kind of fantasy film that blends everyday warmth with supernatural intrigue, and the source material’s popularity in Japan gives it a strong creative foundation to build on.

What makes it particularly exciting is the scale of the project — a theatrical film followed by a full 12-episode series expansion. This isn’t a one-off story; it’s a fully built world.

Lee Re as Yomi — The Villain You Won’t Be Able to Hate

This is where the newly released stills do all the talking. Lee Re plays Yomi, the owner of the rival establishment Hwaangdang, and her role is essentially the opposite of everything Jeoncheondang represents. While the wish-granting snack shop brings comfort and magic to its customers, Yomi exists to stir jealousy and desire — actively disrupting fate and opposing Hong Ja (Ra Mi Ran) at every turn.

The stills are striking. Dressed entirely in black, with a cold, penetrating gaze that feels like she can see straight through the person she’s looking at, Lee Re’s Yomi radiates controlled menace. One still shows her gripping a customer’s arm — the implication of interference and manipulation landing immediately without a single word of dialogue needed.

What makes Yomi particularly compelling as a villain is the specific texture Lee Re is bringing to her. With 15 years of acting experience, she’s not playing Yomi as purely sinister — she’s leaning into the character’s flawed, quirky edges to create someone who is deeply frustrating and yet oddly hard to fully dislike.

“While highlighting Yomi’s annoying yet hard-to-hate traits, I focused on the parts where I could naturally show my presence in the film.” — Lee Re

That self-awareness about the character — understanding that the best villains aren’t simply evil but are genuinely complicated — suggests Yomi is going to be one of the most talked-about performances when the film releases.

Why This Film Deserves Your Attention

Beyond the fantasy premise and the villain intrigue, Strange Snack Shop Jeoncheondang sits in an interesting creative space. Korean live-action adaptations of Japanese source material have a strong track record, and the combination of Ra Mi Ran’s warmth as the lead and Lee Re’s sharpness as the antagonist creates exactly the kind of tonal contrast a film like this needs to work.

The fact that it’s launching as both a film and a 12-episode series also means this story has room to breathe and expand well beyond what a single theatrical runtime can offer.
