Michael Patrick, Game of Thrones actor, dies at 35 after a 3-year MND battle—a tribute to a gifted Irish actor who turned tragedy into timeless art.
Some people live quietly. Michael Patrick lived loudly, bravely, and brilliantly — right until the very end.
Michael Patrick, an Irish actor known for his work on stage and screen, has died following a three-year battle with Motor Neuron Disease. He was 35. His wife, Naomi Sheehan, confirmed the news on April 8, writing that he passed peacefully, surrounded by family and friends, after 10 days in hospital.

More Than a Game of Thrones Cameo
Michael Patrick played a Wildling Rioter in Game of Thrones in 2016 — one of his first TV roles — before going on to appear in BBC One’s Blue Lights, Steven Knight’s This Town, and BBC Three’s My Left Nut, which he also co-wrote.
But television was only one corner of his story. Patrick studied physics at Cambridge University, where he performed with the famous Cambridge Footlights comedy troupe, and met his long-time creative partner Oisín Kearney. Together they built a body of work rooted in raw honesty and dark humour.
Art Born From Adversity
When MND struck in 2023, most people would have stepped back from the stage. Michael Patrick stepped forward.
Diagnosed in February 2023, he went on to create and star in an adaptation of The Tragedy of Richard III in which the titular character also had MND and used a wheelchair — winning the Judges’ Award at The Stage Awards for his performance.
The Lyric Theatre’s executive producer, Jimmy Fay, called his Richard III performance “one of the greatest performances ever on the Lyric stage.”
His father had also died of MND when Michael was a young boy — making his later work on the disease not just artistic courage, but a deeply personal reckoning.
He also channelled his diagnosis into a one-man show, My Right Foot — named after where he first felt weakness from MND — calling it a spiritual successor to My Left Nut.

A Final Word
His wife Naomi described him as a “titan of a ginger-haired man” who lived with “joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter.”
He was 35. He left behind a wife, a family, a theatre community in mourning — and an extraordinary archive of work that refused to be defined by illness.
That’s legacy.
