Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary Is the Quiet Box Office Giant Nobody Saw Coming

While everyone was busy watching Mario go galactic, Project Hail Mary quietly kept raking in millions — and the numbers tell a truly remarkable story of a sci-fi film that refuses to stop.

Even after the massive arrival of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Project Hail Mary held its ground impressively, collecting USD 31.8 million in its 3-day third weekend at the US domestic box office — a drop of just 41 per cent from the previous weekend.

A 41% third-weekend drop for a sci-fi drama? That’s the kind of staying power that studios dream of. Audiences are clearly word-of-mouthing this one hard.

The film’s third-weekend performance turned out to be better than genre heavyweights like Gravity, Dune Part Two, The Martian, and Interstellar — an extraordinary benchmark for any sci-fi release.

Project Hail Mary Box Office: Full Breakdown

As of its third Sunday, the film’s domestic cumulative collection stood at USD 218.3 million, surpassing the entire domestic lifetime earnings of Interstellar (including all its re-releases at USD 203.2 million). Internationally, the film has grossed USD 203.4 million, pushing its global total to USD 421.7 million.

At the current pace, Project Hail Mary is on track to surpass USD 450 million globally before the week is out, with USD 500 million firmly in its sights.

What Is Project Hail Mary About?

Based on Andy Weir’s acclaimed novel, Project Hail Mary stars Ryan Gosling as Ryland Grace — an American middle-school science teacher and former molecular biologist who wakes from a deep coma aboard a spaceship with no memory of how he got there. As he slowly pieces together his mission, he befriends an alien named Rocky, and together they work to save Earth from an existential threat. pinkvilla

It’s the kind of film that reminds you why you fell in love with cinema — emotionally rich, intellectually thrilling, and surprisingly funny. The Ryan Gosling + alien buddy-movie format? Nobody asked for it, but everybody needed it.
