Chelsea managed to qualify for their first Champions League semi finals in seven years, and that encapsulated the progress that Thomas Tuchel hasade since taking over the club. In the fallout of the victory against Porto, Thiago Silva has reaffirmed the footballing world that he wants to stay at top level, and wants to go to 2022 World Cup as part of the Brazil squad.

He is keen on staying at Chelsea and is appreciative of the manager and the club. They can consider signing another CB but they are first and foremost, willing to extend his contract. The reason behind the topic of a new centre-back rising is due to the age of Thiago Silva. Despite the player’s form, and consistency at the back, he is currently 36.

Hence, while the player and the club are keen on extending their partnership for another year, it is difficult to not see the need to replace Silva after a certain point. The preparations for a post-Thiago Silva era could be started this summer itself.

Elsewhere, Gigio Donnarumma is still negotiating and the discussions have become stale with Milan. There is currently no agreement between the two parties regarding an extension. €8 million per season was the last bid, and was not accepted by the Italian shot stopper.

The internet has been flooded with rumours linking Chelsea with a bid for Donnarumma, but while nothing is in place just yet, something could develop in the weeks to come. The priority for Donnarumma is still to stay, but how it develops in the weeks to come will dictate the future.
