Apple TV+’s most gripping psychological thriller just flipped everything we thought we knew about Nancy’s secret affair, her crumbling marriage, and the dangerous man known only as “David.”

If you’ve been theorizing about Imperfect Women since Episode 1, Episode 4 just rewarded your patience — and raised about five new questions in the process.

Imperfect Women Episode 4 Recap: Nancy’s World Unravels

Episode 4, titled Nancy, unfolds entirely in flashbacks, centered on Nancy’s final New Year’s party while weaving in key moments from her past.

Nancy grew up in a difficult household — her mother was an alcoholic, and her stepfather Scott was abusive. From a young age, Nancy learned that everything in the world was transactional, and she grew up believing she had to impress everyone around her or face abandonment.

That childhood trauma bleeds directly into the chaos of Episode 4’s party.

Did Nancy Know About the Divorce?

Driven by suspicion after Robert’s evasive behavior, Nancy retreats to his laptop. What she discovers is that Robert has been in contact with a lawyer about getting a divorce — a discovery that leaves her visibly shaken. Show Snob

She does not appear to know for certain that Robert plans to leave her, but she becomes convinced that something is wrong after finding the “separation of assets” emails. From that point, the episode frames all her actions through that fear.

The episode stops short of confirming whether divorce proceedings are truly underway — keeping fans guessing.

Key Events at a Glance

The Big Reveal: Who Is “David”?

The episode’s critical revelation occurs when Howard approaches Nancy to thank her for getting him a ballet job. He notes that a coordinator mistakenly referred to him as “David.” This leads to a playful exchange where Howard calls Nancy “Louise,” and she responds by calling him “David.” Theviewersperspective

In the fourth episode of Imperfect Women, David is revealed to be Howard — Mary’s husband. The bartender named David was a deliberate red herring: Nancy turned him down, showing he is not connected to the central mystery.

The revelation reframes the entire series. “David” isn’t a stranger — he’s the husband of Nancy’s best friend. This is classic psychological thriller storytelling, where the most dangerous secrets are buried inside intimacy.
