Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa’s ‘Animal Friends’ Film Delay Pushes Release to 2027

Ryan Reynolds and Jason Momoa’s comedy “Animal Friends” hit a snag. The project’s moving from its original 2026 release date to 2027 after production ran into some unexpected challenges. The animal-centered adventure needed extra time to work through filming obstacles—another reminder of how tricky movie production has become since the pandemic.

What Caused the Film Delay?

Multiple production headaches popped up during filming. The real culprit? Coordinating animals—which is basically the whole point of the movie. That required the team to rethink certain scenes and rework the schedule. Unlike standard scarpetta season production timelines, “Animal Friends” needs specialized handling and strict safety rules for its animal scenes.

Reynolds and Momoa worked great together, but the production crew decided that pushing to meet the 2026 deadline would hurt the film’s quality. That decision fits a bigger industry shift—studios are finally choosing creative quality over arbitrary deadlines, something they should’ve learned from past expensive flops.

Impact on Studio Plans

The delay shook up the studio’s release schedule. Moving “Animal Friends” to 2027 actually helps it avoid the crowded summer 2026 slate and land in a better spot. Studios are getting smarter about this—they’d rather push back than put out half-baked movies.

Marketing and merchandise timelines got affected too. Release dates usually kick off merchandise production, so the extra time let the studio rethink its whole commercial approach. When movies finally ship fully finished, they tend to do better—we’re talking 15-20% stronger opening weekends based on recent industry data.

What This Means for Audiences

Reynolds and Momoa fans have to wait longer. But here’s the good news: the extra production time should deliver a better final product. Audiences are getting savvy about this—they actually reward patience when it results in quality films.

There’s also potential for franchise building down the road. The studio’s probably thinking about whether “Animal Friends” could spawn sequels or bigger universes, making this delay strategically smart for the long game. Like don’t shy production choices, prioritizing sustainable storytelling beats quick cash grabs.
