Tom Hanks has given us some of cinema’s most powerful war films—stories that dig into combat, sacrifice, and what it takes to survive. The acclaimed actor has delivered four unforgettable performances in war dramas spanning decades, each offering a different angle on what soldiers face. From intimate character studies to massive historical epics, these films show why Hanks is Hollywood’s go-to actor for stories about soldiers and survival. This ranking breaks down each film’s impact on the narrative, how well it’s made technically, and why it still matters today.

Saving Private Ryan Dominates the Ranking

Steven Spielberg’s 1998 masterpiece kicked off Tom Hanks’s war filmography and basically rewrote how we watch combat on screen. Captain John Miller became an archetype that influenced military dramas for the next two decades. The D-Day sequence is still unmatched in its raw, visceral authenticity—a bar that Hollywood films hitting theaters today still struggle to clear.

What makes Hanks’s performance so memorable? He plays Miller with restrained vulnerability, showing the weight of leadership without ever overplaying it. You see the moral conflicts tearing him apart beneath the surface, which makes everything feel devastatingly real instead of just another war movie moment.

Forrest Gump’s War Subplot Excellence

Forrest Gump (1994) isn’t purely a war film, but Hanks’s Vietnam sequences anchor the entire story emotionally. His portrayal of a soldier who carries his wounded friend across battlefields—without fully grasping what the war is even about—reveals something profound about human nature.

Those war scenes are actually brief, yet they establish Forrest’s unshakeable loyalty and innocence. These qualities ripple through everything that happens afterward. It’s a reminder that Hanks’s war roles go beyond explosions and gunfire. They explore what soldiers carry with them psychologically long after the fighting stops.

Bridge of Spies and Cold War Tension

Spielberg brought Hanks back for this 2015 Cold War thriller, though the warfare here looks completely different. Lawyer James Donovan negotiates espionage and nuclear brinkmanship without firing a single shot—a different kind of conflict entirely.

Hanks’s measured performance captures the tension of ideological struggle perfectly. It proves that his war narratives go well beyond traditional battlefields. The film’s careful pacing and moral complexity earn it the third spot on this list.

Greyhound Brings Naval Combat to Life

Captain Krause commands a destroyer escort in this 2020 Apple TV+ release, focusing on naval warfare during World War II. The film nails the technical details and submarine-hunting sequences deliver authentic maritime combat.

While it doesn’t have the cultural impact of Saving Private Ryan, Greyhound shows Hanks’s ongoing commitment to portraying soldiers with dignity and accuracy.

Ranking Summary: Saving Private Ryan takes the top spot without question. Forrest Gump comes second, Bridge of Spies third, and Greyhound rounds out the list. Each one captures a different side of what Hanks brings to war storytelling. His work in this space remains a defining part of his legacy.
