Samsung’s foundry division just pulled off one of the most dramatic semiconductor turnarounds in recent memory. Its 2nm GAA yields have now climbed to 60%, more than tripling from just 20% in the second half of 2025 — and the chip industry is taking notice.

From Disaster to Comeback in Two Quarters

Six months ago, Samsung couldn’t crack 20% on this node — that was around the time people started calling the foundry business a lost cause. What changed? An unlikely catalyst: Bitcoin mining equipment companies Canaan and MicroBT commissioned 2nm production, giving Samsung’s engineers the sustained volume they needed to crack defect density problems on GAA transistors. More than tripling yield at the leading edge in two quarters isn’t routine — it’s fundamental materials science and metrology work done right.

Big Customers Are Already Signed Up

Samsung has secured a $16.5 billion contract to manufacture Tesla’s AI6 chips, orders for the Exynos 2600 smartphone AP, Apple image sensors, and mining ASICs from Canaan, with industry sources expecting Qualcomm to eventually join the lineup. The Exynos 2600 itself is already in mass production — delivering CPU performance up to 39% higher than the Exynos 2500 and 113% better generative AI performance, powered by a deca-core Arm architecture design. Samsung’s Taylor, Texas plant is set to begin operations in 2026, with production capacity expected to more than double by end of year.

TSMC still dominates — maintaining 2nm yields between 60 and 70% with Apple having booked over half its N2 capacity — but Samsung’s GAA head start is a real differentiator. TSMC is only now adopting GAA at 2nm, whereas Samsung has already accumulated hands-on GAA experience from its 3nm ramp, however troubled that ramp was. FAQs

What is Samsung’s current 2nm GAA yield rate?

Samsung’s 2nm GAA yields have reached approximately 60% — up from just 20% in the second half of 2025, more than tripling in two quarters.

How does Samsung’s 2nm compare to TSMC’s 2nm?

TSMC currently leads with 2nm yields of 60–70%, but Samsung holds a GAA experience advantage having deployed the technology since its 3nm node.
