Blue Tigresses’ AFC Women’s Asian Cup Dream Over: They fought with everything they had — but a cruel stroke of goalkeeping luck and clinical finishing from Chinese Taipei ended India’s campaign in Sydney.

Sometimes, football can be brutally unfair. India’s women played with spirit, created chances, and even clawed back an equalizer — but on Tuesday night at the Western Sydney Stadium, the Blue Tigresses were eliminated from the AFC Women’s Asian Cup Australia 2026 after a painful 1-3 defeat to Chinese Taipei. It’s the kind of exit that stings long after the final whistle.

Blue Tigresses’ AFC Women’s Asian Cup Dream Over: A Night of Missed Moments and Cruel Luck

India needed a victory and at least two goals to stand a chance of qualifying for the knockout rounds. Head coach Amelia Valverde set her team up with intent, and for a large chunk of the match, they looked capable of delivering exactly that.

Chinese Taipei struck first through Su Yu-hsuan in the 12th minute after a defensive error, when a miscued clearance and an underpowered backpass gifted them an open goal. But India rallied. Manisha Kalyan — India’s standout performer and a constant menace all night — produced a thunderous free kick that struck the underside of the crossbar and, after VAR intervention, was awarded as a goal. India were level, and hope was very much alive.

Then came the moment that broke Indian hearts. Chinese Taipei were awarded a penalty in first-half injury time. Hsu Yi-yun’s spot-kick hit the woodwork — but the ball struck goalkeeper Panthoi’s back and rolled over the line. Wrong place, wrong time, and suddenly India were 2-1 down at half-time despite doing little wrong.

In the second half, India’s repeated attempts to equalise proved costly, as Chinese Taipei broke through on the counter, with Chen Yu-ting rounding Panthoi and finishing into an empty net for 3-1. To compound the misery, both Panthoi and captain Sweety Devi Ngangbam had to be stretchered off after a collision.

Manisha Kalyan gave everything until the very last second — a free header off a corner in injury time rattled the upright — but it simply wasn’t India’s night.

A Brave Exit, But Lessons to Learn

For all the heartbreak, India’s women showed genuine quality on the big stage. Goalkeeper Panthoi was exceptional throughout the tournament, Manisha Kalyan was world-class in moments, and the team competed against far better-resourced nations without flinching.

But defensive lapses at critical moments — a pattern in this campaign — ultimately cost them. If Indian women’s football is to take the next step, converting those flashes of brilliance into consistent results must be the priority.
