Harry Styles Album & ‘Paint By Numbers’ — Key Facts

What Are the Clues in ‘Paint By Numbers’?

The song features slower, more introspective production compared to the rest of the album — and fans have connected specific lyrics referencing “the weight of American children whose hearts you break” and a line about not being “thirty-three” to Harry’s relationship with Olivia Wilde, who used to attend his US Love On Tour shows alongside her children, while the age reference points to their near decade-long age gap. The pair met on the set of Don’t Worry Darling, the 2022 film directed by Wilde in which Styles starred, and were in an on-again, off-again relationship for nearly two years from January 2021 to November 2022. WB Pay

The Liam Payne Connection

There’s another layer. Fans also connected lyrics on the bridge — referencing “kids with water guns, watch them run” — to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne, with whom Styles and the other 1D members were known for playing water gun games together. WB Pay

Separately, Harry spoke publicly for the first time about struggling with Liam’s passing, describing it as an extremely difficult feeling to process, compounded by the weight of others’ expectations about how he should grieve. WB Pay

It’s a deeply layered album — grief, romance, age gaps and American heartbreak all woven into 42 minutes.
