What’s The Bride Story?

Set in 1930s Chicago, a lonely Frankenstein’s monster (Bale) travels to seek out pioneering scientist Dr. Euphronious (Bening) to build him a companion. Together they revive a murdered young woman — and The Bride (Buckley) is born. But what follows is far beyond anyone’s plans: murder, possession, a radical feminist cultural movement, and an outlaw love story.

Gyllenhaal draws inspiration from the 1935 film Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel, but channels it through a thoroughly modern lens. The film cost upwards of $100 million and was shot entirely on IMAX-certified digital cameras — and it shows. Critics are already calling Buckley and Bale’s performances the year’s most visceral so far.

Jessie Buckley’s triple role is the heart of the film — she plays Ida, the Chicago party girl whose murder sets events in motion, the reawakened Bride herself, and a version of Mary Shelley, effectively making her the past, present and soul of the entire story.

FAQs

**Q1. Who plays The Bride in The Bride! (2026)?**

Jessie Buckley plays a triple role — she is Ida (the murdered woman), The Bride (the reawakened companion created for Frankenstein’s monster), and a version of Mary Shelley, the author who first imagined Frankenstein.

**Q2. Is The Bride! (2026) a remake of Bride of Frankenstein?**

It is a reimagining rather than a direct remake — director Maggie Gyllenhaal draws inspiration from the 1935 Bride of Frankenstein and Mary Shelley’s 1818 novel Frankenstein, but sets the story in 1930s Chicago with an original feminist, punk-rock narrative.
