Memory of a Killer Episode 5 “Betrayal” Ending Explained: Did Angelo Confess to Joe — And Is His Mind Already Slipping Like Michael’s?

Patrick Dempsey just delivered the most gripping episode of this FOX thriller yet. The long-awaited flashback episode finally tells us why Angelo framed JB — and the final scene left jaws on the floor. Let’s break it all down.

Memory of a Killer Episode 5: Key Details

Why Did Angelo Frame JB?

Angelo visits JB before carrying out the hit. JB insists he never stole from Dutch’s donations and reveals that he hands over all collections to Michael — prompting Angelo to investigate his brother. He is shocked to find hundreds of sticky notes in Michael’s office, indicating Michael’s memory had already begun to fail him.

With that truth uncovered, Angelo faces an impossible choice. He knows he can’t clear Michael’s name — in Dutch’s world, a man with early-onset Alzheimer’s is a liability and a death sentence regardless of intent. So Angelo decides the only way to save Michael is to give Dutch a different sacrificial lamb.

Angelo executes JB — an innocent man — to keep Michael’s secret safe. Later, Dutch holds a funeral for the very brother he ordered killed, oblivious to the full truth. nbcpalmsprings It is, frankly, one of the most darkly ironic scenes on television right now.

The emotional gut-punch comes from another revelation: in a moment of clarity, Michael reveals that their father used to beat him, and that a teenage Angelo was the one who ended the abuse by killing him. nbcpalmsprings Violence has always been Angelo’s language of love.

Did Angelo Actually Confess?

Sort of — but not completely. Confusing Joe for Michael, Angelo confesses to killing their father and almost confesses to framing JB — but somehow gets back to his senses. Confused, Joe looks at Angelo, and it remains unclear how much he understood from the manic ramblings. MSN

What truly grips viewers is the parallel — what Dutch feared Michael would do back then is exactly what Angelo is beginning to do now, which tells us this won’t end well. justjared

This is the episode’s masterstroke. Angelo’s mind is beginning to mirror his brother’s, and just like Alzheimer’s disease slowly stripped Michael of his secrets, it’s now doing the same to Angelo — one dangerous slip at a time.
