India’s AI self-reliance mission isn’t theoretical anymore. The IndiaAI Mission — approved in March 2024 with ₹10,000 crore — has already disbursed over ₹100 crore in GPU subsidies, selected 12 companies to build sovereign LLMs, and seen three models go live at the India AI Impact Summit in February 2026. Here are the 15 Indian AI Startups that matter most to India’s AI independence story right now.

The Three Models Already Live
Sarvam AI is the furthest ahead. Its 105-billion-parameter model reportedly outperforms systems such as DeepSeek R1 and Google’s Gemini Flash on several benchmarks, using a mixture-of-experts architecture to reduce inference costs. The Indus consumer app, powered by the 105B model, has limited access due to compute constraints — but it’s live.
BharatGen Param2 is the most strategically significant. With ₹900 crore in funding under the IndiaAI Mission, BharatGen has emerged as the largest beneficiary so far of the government’s sovereign LLM initiative. As a fully open-source model on Hugging Face, it functions as public infrastructure — any developer, startup, or government department can fine-tune and deploy it.
Gnani.ai’s Vachana TTS solves the problem neither Sarvam nor BharatGen addresses: voice access for non-literate and low-connectivity users. The system can recreate a person’s voice using less than 10 seconds of recorded audio while preserving tone, pitch and speaking style, with a Mean Opinion Score of 4.23 and a character error rate below 0.6 per cent.

What Makes This Different from Previous India Tech Pushes
The IndiaAI Mission’s design — GPU subsidies plus sovereign model mandates plus open-source release requirements — is structurally different from previous government tech initiatives that produced proprietary systems with limited adoption. The BharatGen open-source approach in particular means the entire ecosystem can build on top of public infrastructure rather than waiting for a single vendor’s API. Vaishnaw set an explicit competitive target for these teams: “They must strive to become among the top five globally in their respective domains.”

FAQs
Which Indian AI startup has the most advanced sovereign LLM in 2026?
Sarvam AI leads with two models — a 30B and a 105B parameter LLM trained entirely in India — with the larger model benchmarked above DeepSeek R1 and Google Gemini Flash on several tests.
What is BharatGen and how is it different from other Indian AI models?
BharatGen is an IIT Bombay-led consortium backed by ₹900 crore in government funding, building open-source multilingual AI across 22 Indian languages — released on Hugging Face for any developer or institution to fine-tune and deploy freely.
