Valentine’s Day is supposed to be the most romantic day at the box office — couples flooding multiplexes, popcorn in hand, ready to fall in love with love stories. This year, that magic has arrived in half-measures. O’ Romeo starring Shahid Kapoor and Triptii Dimri has opened to a respectable ₹8 crore nett on Day 1, while Tu Yaa Main (Adarsh Gourav, Shanaya Kapoor) has had a near-invisible opening of just ₹50 lakh. Two films, two very different fates — on the same Valentine’s Day.

Valentine’s Day Box Office Snapshot

Mardaani 3 (Holdover)	Rani Mukerji	Cop Drama	Drops ~40%	On course for ₹50 Cr

O’ Romeo — A Fair Start, But Is It Enough?

Let’s be honest — ₹8 crore on Valentine’s Day for a Shahid Kapoor thriller is functional, not spectacular. For context, his last two releases — Teri Baaton Main Uljha Jiya (₹6.50 crore) and Devaa (₹5.50 crore) — had comparable openers, which means the pattern of modest starts continues for Shahid in this phase of his career.

The Valentine’s Day boost could push Saturday higher than usual, since the film does have a love-story angle that appeals to younger couples. Analysts expect the opening weekend to land around ₹27–28 crore, which won’t cover costs but keeps the film commercially alive. The critical test comes Monday — if the film holds, there’s a chance of a decent run. If it crumbles like Devaa, the story ends quickly.

As Wikipedia’s entry on Bollywood box office dynamics notes, Valentine’s Day has historically been one of the most commercially powerful release windows for Hindi romantic and youth-oriented films — making O’ Romeo’s underwhelming advance booking numbers even more noteworthy.

Tu Yaa Main — Already an Uphill Battle

₹50 lakh on opening day on Valentine’s Day is genuinely alarming for any theatrical release. The initial audience reception is reportedly not bad, but in today’s market, poor opening numbers create a vicious cycle — fewer screens, lower footfalls, faster OTT transition. Unless extraordinary word-of-mouth kicks in over the weekend, Tu Yaa Main is looking at a very brief theatrical window.

The Holdovers Win the Day

Meanwhile, the real winners on February 14 remain the holdovers. Border 2 continues its dominant run, marching confidently towards the ₹300 crore nett mark. Mardaani 3 holds decently, staying on track for a ₹50 crore lifetime close. Both films dropped around 40% from Thursday, which is entirely expected given the fresh Valentine’s Day competition.
