The legendary horror franchise is getting a terrifying reboot as Mike Flanagan’s The Exorcist officially confirms its theatrical release for March 12, 2027. With Scarlett Johansson leading the cast and Flanagan at the helm, this fresh take on the iconic possession saga has horror fans counting down the days.

The Exorcist 2027: Key Details

Why the Delay from 2026?

Originally scheduled for March 2026, the production timeline shifted after Flanagan publicly addressed the delay on Tumblr. The horror maestro explained that filming can’t begin until he completes his Carrie mini-series adaptation, making the original date impossible. This postponement ultimately worked in Universal’s favor, allowing them to reimagine their franchise strategy.

After The Exorcist: Believer (2023) underperformed at the box office, Universal wisely abandoned plans for a full trilogy. Instead, they pivoted to this standalone reboot helmed by Flanagan—a director with an impeccable track record in modern horror. A Radical New Vision

While plot details remain shrouded in mystery, Flanagan has confirmed this will be a “radical new take” on the legendary franchise. The film shares continuity with William Friedkin’s 1973 masterpiece but is not a sequel to Believer. Instead, it reimagines the core themes of demonic possession and spiritual warfare that made the original a cultural phenomenon.

The Exorcist franchise originated from William Peter Blatty’s 1971 novel, inspired by the real 1949 exorcism of Roland Doe. Since then, it’s spawned sequels, prequels, and even a 2016 TV series. Explore more about classic horror franchises in our dedicated section.

Dream Team Behind the Scenes

Mike Flanagan brings serious credentials to this project, having previously delivered critically acclaimed works like The Fall of the House of Usher, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck (which won the TIFF audience award in 2024). This marks his fourth collaboration with Blumhouse, following Oculus (2013), Hush (2016), and Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016).

Scarlett Johansson leads the cast following her November 2025 casting announcement, joined by breakout star Jacobi Jupe from Hamnet. The production team includes David Robinson, Jason Blum, and Flanagan as producers, with Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek executive producing. What Makes This Different?

Unlike recent franchise attempts, Flanagan’s approach prioritizes quality over quantity. His Red Room Pictures is co-producing alongside established horror powerhouses, ensuring creative control stays with a visionary director. The theatrical-only release strategy (no streaming debut) signals Universal’s confidence in this reboot’s box office potential.
