Union Budget 2026: Gaming Industry’s Wishlist Revealed

India’s gaming and esports industry stands at a pivotal moment as Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman prepares to present Union Budget 2026-27 on February 1. With Prime Minister Modi recently highlighting gaming’s potential to export Indian culture globally through mythology-based titles, industry leaders are hopeful for policy measures that can transform India into a gaming powerhouse beyond just consumption.

PM Modi’s Gaming Vision Sparks Industry Optimism

At the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2026, PM Modi emphasized gaming as a major global economy, suggesting mythological figures like Lord Hanuman could drive worldwide gaming success. This statement has energized an industry seeking recognition as a legitimate economic contributor rather than mere entertainment.

Industry Expectations From Budget 2026

Regulatory Clarity Tops Priority List

Akshat Rathee, Co-founder of NODWIN Gaming, emphasizes the need for clear regulatory frameworks through PROGA (Provisional Regulation of Online Gaming Act) implementation. The industry seeks taxation structures that distinguish skill-based competitive gaming from other categories, enabling sustainable business models.

Animesh Agarwal (8Bit Thug), Co-Founder of S8UL Esports, highlights grassroots development importance as states integrate esports into educational institutions. Recognition within national sporting frameworks would unlock government support, training facilities, and legitimacy comparable to traditional sports.

Hardware and Startup Ecosystem Needs Support

Vishal Parekh, COO of CyberPowerPC India, points to infrastructure gaps holding back competitive gamers. Budget allocations for gaming hardware subsidies and esports training centers could democratize access beyond metro cities.

Sagar Nair from LVL Zero Incubator advocates for dedicated AVGC XR fund allocations targeting early-stage gaming startups. With India’s gaming market projected to reach $8.6 billion by 2027, strategic investment support could create globally competitive Indian game studios developing original IP.

States Leading the Charge

Several states have pioneered esports integration through school tournaments, college programs, and youth initiatives, demonstrating demand exists at grassroots levels. Federal budget support could scale these state-level successes nationally, creating pathways from amateur to professional gaming careers.

Indian teams increasingly compete globally, with creators building substantial audiences. However, monetization challenges and policy uncertainty limit growth potential that clearer regulations could unlock.

For esports enthusiasts at TechnoSports tracking policy developments, Budget 2026 represents a critical opportunity. Whether the government matches its vision with concrete support measures will define India’s gaming trajectory for years ahead.
